We are getting more and more requests on how to troubleshoot no start, hard start and rough running issues on these engines. When these engines quit on you it is often something simple. The temptation is to go to a forum and get advice and sometimes end up throwing expensive parts at the problem. In any engine diagnosis you should always start with the simple things first. You would not believe the number of problems I have seen on both the 103 and 104 engines that were related to distributor cap, rotor and/or spark plugs. And these are all inexpensive items you can replace yourself. For top performance plugs should be changed every 30K miles and the rotor and cap every 60K miles. I have had these engines just quit and will not restart due to bad plugs and or/corroded cap and rotor. I know it is hard to believe - but let me tell you - it happens more often than you think and people have wasted tons of money on expensive parts. But there is potential trouble in replacing the cap and rotor if you don't have the right tools. The 5 mm hex head bolts that hold the cap in place can be hard to get to and the 3 mm hex head bolts on the rotor are easy to strip and then you have serious trouble. In this kit I will provide you a full kit of hex screw driver and Allen bits and explain in my installation tips how to use them to prevent these problems. The spark plugs I include are the proper Bosch plugs with the copper electrode. If you have platinum plugs in your engine throw them away! Older Mercedes gas engines do not like platinum plugs.
The kits contains a new Bosch Cap, new Bosch Rotor, New Cap O-ring, six copper electrode spark plugs and the tools shown. I will even throw in a tube of dialectic grease that you can apply to your spark plug wires to get them off easily in the future. If your engine has more than 80,000 miles since the spark plug wires were changed I highly recommend you change those as well.
Just recently I had a customer with a 300CE coupe that would not start or would start and quit on the road after it had not been driven for 4 or 5 days. It was hard to troubleshoot since it did not do it all the time. I was suspecting he had a problem with his ECU (very expensive). I decided to pull the cap and inspect it. Sure enough there was corrosion built up on the tips and the rotor should signs of burning (darkish brown coloring). Changed the rotor and the cap and the problem was cured!
